| Conferences, meetings, and events in this historic market town will appreciate its heritage architecture (e.g. ruined castle, some timber-framed buildings, Georgian town houses, 18th century Town Hall [where Britain’s first secret ballot took place in 1872], Art Nouveau museum façade, underground medieval hermitage, Buttercross etc.). Other attractions include Pontefract Racecourse (around 16 meetings a year), art gallery, regular markets, and the chance to buy Pontefract Cakes (liquorice). Conference delegates can reach Pontefract easily using the M62 and A1, by train, and through flights into the airports at Doncaster Robin Hood and Leeds Bradford.
