Located in Skeldergate, the ancient Roman Waterfront, which now leads from the medieval city walls across the river to the centre of York. Lady Annes nestles in a secluded English courtyard garden; it will delight you with its tranquillity yet close proximity to all of York’s main attractions.

As you are walking in the grounds you are walking the ground trodden three centuries ago by the widows of the freemen of York. You are treading the path of workers at the 19th century sawmill and the place where some of the finest organs were built for the churches of York and beyond. You walk where Hans Hesse, director of York City Art Gallery would entertain his good friend, Charlie Chaplin, one of the greatest laughter makers of all time.

Each building is steeped in local heritage and history and has its own particular story to tell.

Skeldergate House was built in 1659 by an endowment given by Dame Anne Middleton, the wife of the then Sheriff of York, from whom the hotel takes its name. Originally built as a refuge for twenty widows of the freemen of the city of York. It was later rebuilt and extended in 1829 at the expense of the Corporation of York and then passed to the City of York Charity Trustees before being rescued from near dereliction be the current owners in 1972 opening for business just 6 months later, in June 1973.

Cromwell House was originally built as part of an early 19th century sawmill close to the river, it now houses 18 carefully renovated en-suite bedrooms on 2 floors. Many of the rooms have views to the nearby city walls and over the historic topography of medieval York.

Chaplin House named after its famous guest, retains many of its fine 18th century architectural features.
