| Why
Kirkcudbright ? |
| Conferences, meetings, and events will enjoy this ancient harbour town (conservation area) and artists’ centre on the estuary of the River Dee for its heritage within the ‘Stewartry’, so-named because this area was in the 14th and 15th centuries administered by the Kings’ stewards. Points of interest include the covenanters memorials in the old town graveyard (and that of the ‘tinker king’ Billy Marshal), the landmark 16th century McLellan’s castle and the 18th century Tolbooth. Venues include smaller characterful hotels and culture/heritage settings.
Proximity to the milder climate and birdlife of the Solway Firth, (and Solway Coast Heritage Trail), the ‘Stewartry’ countryside dotted with neat towns, archaeological sites and ruined castles (and outdoor pursuits options), and to the heritage town of Gatehouse of Fleet, are further plus points. Conference delegates can reach Kirkcudbright via the M6/A74 and A75, by train (to Dumfries plus taxi), and using flights into the airports at Glasgow and Prestwick.
In conclusion: consider Kirkcudbright for its sense of escape, strong tradition of individuality and independence, excellent scope for outdoor pursuits (plenty of golf courses!), and small but welcoming venues.
