| Conferences, meetings and events in this historic market town will enjoy its reputation for the week-long ‘Appleby Horse Fair’ held annually (June) for over three centuries. Lying in a loop of the River Eden at the edge of the Pennines, Appleby features the remains of a Norman castle, sites associated with the distinguished 17th century life of Lady Anne Clifford (e.g. St. Lawrence Church; St. Anne’s Hospital), and also a Moot Hall. Venues include smaller town and country house hotels, and cultural/heritage properties.
Proximity to the under-appreciated and remote corner of Cumbria known as Eden Valley (scenery, villages, market towns, farmers’ markets, local foods, archaeological sites, outdoor pursuits etc.), and to excellent hill-walking country (by the Eden, and along the local Becks) are further plus points. Conference delegates can reach Appleby easily via the A66, by train, and using flights into the airports at Manchester, Durham Tees Valley, and Newcastle.
