Harwich ? |
| Conferences, meetings, and events will appreciate Harwich both as a colourful and busy ‘gateway to Europe’ port (note the cruise liners), and as a heritage location where ‘Old Harwich’ attractions include narrow streets, Georgian and early-Victorian facades, maritime walking trails, quayside restaurants, a unique Treadwheel Crane (dated to 1667), harbour cruises, Lifeboat Museum, a Grade1-listed Guildhall, and the Electric Palace, an early cinema little altered since 1911. The Redoubt of 1808 was a circular fortification intended to defend the harbour against Napoleon, and is now a museum. Venues include a choice of individualistic hotels and culture/heritage settings.
Proximity to the Essex ‘Sunshine Coast’ (and resort of Clacton-on-Sea), the foot ferry to Felixstowe, the two (originally gas-lit) lighthouses at nearby Dovercourt, the wildlife estuary of the River Stour, and inland to ‘Constable Country’, are further plus points. Conference delegates can reach Harwich easily using the A12/A120, by train, and through flights into London Stansted airport.
