From the Hotel in the other direction along Market Street to Borough Street-is the largely unaltered late 18th/19th century main shopping street.The Church of St Edward the Martyr is a splendid example of the 12th century ecclesiastical building boasting fine tombs with excellent brass rubbing possibilities, and a very rare architectural feature: a “double –squint”. A short distance away, along the delightful narrow street called Apiary Gate is the old stone-built house, which opened in Easter 2000 as the new village museum.

The building, which we occupy, was constructed in 1794 as a coaching inn on the main route from Nottingham to Ashby. It was originally named the “Rawdon Hotel” and was conceived and built by the Marquis of Hastings.

The advent of steam railways saw a drop in horse-drawn coach travel and a reduction in the need for overnight road-side accommodation and stabling. This resulted in the closure of the Rawdon Hotel in 1850.

In the lead up to the Great War, the house became home to Belgian refugees and a Commander Bruel occupied the house from 1918 to 1950.

In 1967, this building was renamed “Donington Manor” and began to operate as a hotel. It came into my family’s ownership in 2001 and it sits comfortably in our modest portfolio of small, privately-owned hotels in historic settings.

Gradually, we are bringing Donington Manor back to its former glory and my team always delight in showing guests those areas of the property which we have thus far refurbished and which set a benchmark for our future

Castle Donington is perfectly situated right in the centre of the country and less than five minutes drive from both the M1 and A50, and Nottingham East Midlands Airport.

Bedroom descriptions.

Small rooms

We have a very small number of small rooms at Donington Manor which are ideal for lone travellers or budget conscious couples. All but one of these rooms have double beds and usually have an en suite shower room. Some are accessible via an outside courtyard, within 30 yards of Reception.

Double rooms

All but one of our double bedrooms have 5ft beds and en suite bathrooms. The remaining room has an en suite shower room, but has the added feature of a four-poster bed.

King bedded rooms

These rooms have 6ft beds and en suite bathroom. Our king beds are Sealy Posturpedic® with individual mattresses for each guest, ensuring a good night’s sleep with maximum support. Therefore by prior arrangement and subject to availability, these beds may be split into two single divans.

Superior rooms

Our superior rooms are especially spacious and have interesting features such as dramatic ceilings, fireplaces, freestanding tubs, Georgian sash windows and wood panelling. Some even have sofa beds, which, by prior arrangement and subject to a rate supplement, are suitable for children up to the age of 18.

Suites

Some suites at Donington Manor enjoy direct garden access and private terraces. Others are lofty with features such as four-poster beds and cosy sitting rooms.
