Why
Iceland? |
|
Promoted officially for its cultural vitality, strong traditions, and interaction with nature, Iceland is a Nordic destination that is memorably different and special. The landscape displays the influences both of volcanoes (lava flows), and glaciers (e.g. Vatnajökull) with highlights including waterfalls and hot springs. Naturally this is a location for outdoor pursuits.
Conference facilities are centred in hotels in the capital city of Reykjavik (small, safe, friendly, village-y), and a new concert and conference centre (for up to 1800) opens in 2009. Cultural opportunities include orchestral music, opera, theatre, museums and arts/crafts galleries in a city labelled ‘cool but hot’. It is also largely smoke-free because geothermal power is used.
Winter adventures close to the Arctic Circle, whale-watching, puffin-spotting, the special qualities both of the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights, and the unique dimension of Viking heritage, are noteworthy Iceland advantages.
Iceland is reachable from most parts of Europe in 2-4 hours by air (or 5hrs. 30 mins from New York).
