| Why
Al Iskandariyah (Alex.) ? |
| Meetings and events in Egypt’s most northerly and second biggest city (known as the ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean’) will enjoy both its heritage (founded by Alexander the Great, and later the capital of Roman Egypt and setting for the turbulent relationship between Antony and Cleopatra. It was also the capital of the Greek Dynasty ruling Egypt from approx 323 BC ( after the death of Alexander the Great ) and also through the Roman Emperors rule over Egypt. ) and international resort destination facilities. Major global hotel brands represented in the city include Four Seasons, Hilton. Marriott. Radisson, and Sheraton. Alexandria is only 225km from Cairo.
Heritage city appeal is again being emphasised here including the ancient Anfushi tombs, a traditional souk (market) quarter, an antiques district and also the recently-opened (2002) and architecturally iconic Bibliotheca Alexandrina (located close to the site of the ancient Great Library that burned down in 640AD). The main sites of Alexandria include the Catacombs of Kom EL Shoqafa , The fortress of Sultan Qait Bay which is built on the site of the Phaoas or the ancient Light House that was one of the one wonders of the Ancient World . Alexandria also has museums as the Graeco Roman Museum that exhibits items that belong to the Greek & Roman rulers of Alexandria.
This is in addition to the grand palaces that belonged to the Past Royal Family of Egypt. Alongside this contemporary library is its namesake Conference Centre (facilities to 2500 delegates) and associated Museum of Antiquities.
Add-on options include luxury yachting (Porto Marina); the stylish resort destinations of Agami, Hannoville and Sidi Kheir Agami & Hannoville have only private summer houses and very modest hotels.
There is a new area West of Alexandria called Porto Marina that is built to be an international resort that houses world wide events in addition to its main function of being a year round family resort on the Mediterranean Sea.
; the white sand (and little known) beaches of Mersa Matrouch; plus excursion opportunities to Rosetta village (likely discovery place of the Rosetta stone) and the Al Alamein battlefield (104 km).
In conclusion: Alexandria combines history with hedonism, the past with today’s pleasures, and is well set to become (officially) ‘a jewel in Egypt’s tourism crown’.
