| Why the
Egypt? |
| Promoted officially as ‘the world’s oldest tourism destination, with over 7000 years of history’ Egypt is celebrated for its diversity … from the mysteries of the Pyramids and the Sphinx to Nile cruises, desert safaris to Red Sea beach and diving resorts, colourful cities to mountain trekking. Above all else, this is the land of Nefertiti, Ramses II, and Tutankhamun. To these qualities can be added year-round sunshine and dry weather. In addition, visitor infrastructure has been much modernised with stunning facilities now ranging from the Cairo International Conference Centre (theatre-style seating to 2500; exhibitions to 6000 sq.m.) to over 90 top class four- and five-star hotels (many are global brands). Look out also for fascinating (air-conditioned) cultural attractions, and important new options for eco- and spa-based experiences. Major improvements and extensions are also ongoing at Cairo International Airport. Approximately 20% of overall tourism demand for the country owes to the meetings market and the annual growth in this sector has risen to around 30%. Egypt is well represented by DMCs.
The antiquity and cultural richness of the country lends inspiration to event theming with examples including a ‘Bedouin Dinner’, ‘1001 Nights’; a ‘Night with Cleopatra’; ‘Pharaonic Night’, an ‘Evening of Nubian dancing, music and cuisine’; ‘Middle Eastern Cabaret’; and a ‘Red Sea Marina Supper’. Further social programme opportunities include more than a dozen top golf courses, 4x4 driving, as well as a range of annual special events, for example, International Camel Racing, the Pharoahs Rally, and a Festival of Arab Music. Among additional centres to discover and explore are Alexandria, Luxor and Thebes – with Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings as ‘definites’ for a visit. For events where teambuilding option is considered important further up-and-coming sporting destinations include Aswan, Marsa Allam (on the Red Sea), and Siwa (a desert oasis)
Most major air carriers service Cairo with specimen flight times of under 5 hours from London, and 14.5 hours from New York. Although a Muslim country, Egypt allows alcohol to be available in café bars, hotels and restaurants. The Holy Month of Ramadan begins around the middle of September. Around 15% of the population is Christian.
